Part-time Bicycle Fleet Rebalancer at Tech Co. (Sunnyvale, CA)

Bikes Make Life Better, Inc. manages a large bike fleet at one of our client organizations — a large hi-tech company in Silicon Valley (Sunnyvale) — and we’re adding to our team.

We’re hiring a part-time bicycle fleet rebalancer (15 – 20 hours/week), Monday through Friday, 4 -7 pm. The ideal candidate should be comfortable working outdoors, riding a bike in varying weather conditions, driving a large van, be a great team player and be familiar with basic bike repair.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Redistributing campus bikes using an e-cargo bike and trailer as well as a sprinter-style van
  • Coordinating with Security on lock-up of bikes
  • Recovering bikes (as needed)
  • Doing very basic bike maintenance (pumping tires, minor adjustments)
  • Performing other work identified by the Program Manager

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Ability to frequently lift 40 pounds
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required
  • Friendly and customer service-driven
  • Good time management and multi-tasking skill
  • Team player with good communication skills
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as with people
  • Working knowledge of, and comfort with, basic office computer programs (Word, Excel, Google Docs, Google Maps, email, etc.)

Basic bike maintenance experience a plus (but not required)

Compensation

$20/hour (15 hours/week + weekends off)

Bikes Make Life Better plans and operates bike programs for large organizations. We serve many of the world’s most respected companies, most notably, Bay Area tech companies. We run a robust bike program for a large tech company in Sunnyvale and are looking for a dynamic individual with management experience to run and support the bike program with our on-site team of mechanic/rebalancers.

Position Overview

The Bike Program Manager is a highly collaborative, customer-driven individual who will manage this large tech company’s bike program, as a part of their transportation program. This individual will manage a small on-site team of Bikes Make Life Better mechanic/rebalancers and coordinate efforts with the client and the Bikes Make Life Better home office team. The position includes managing and supporting the campus bike program, the employee bike commuter program, helping with bike-related events and infrastructure improvements.

The Bike Program Manager will work under the direction of Bikes Make Life Better management, in collaboration with the client’s Transportation staff. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Staffing and People Management
    • Manage a small team of bike mechanics
    • Develop staff to their fullest potential
    • Run a great organization where staff are motivated and committed
    • Plan objectives, assign accountabilities, monitor and appraise job results
    • Lead recruiting, selecting and orienting of new staff
    • Identify and implement relevant training and staff advancement programs
  • Program Management
    • Manage the campus bike program
    • Contribute to infrastructure improvements such as input on better bike parking
    • Manage the commuter bike count program
    • Project manage new bike-related programs
    • Shape bike program policies and procedures
    • Collaborate on monthly activities and other forms of employee engagement
    • Lead efforts for 1 on 1 employee bike commute support
    • Work in tandem with other departments and vendors, such as Wellness and Security
  • Customer Care
    • Act as the primary point of contact for the client
    • Maintain, or exceed, agreed-upon performance levels
    • Participate in regular client and staff meetings in an engaged, informed and collaborative way
  • Financial, Data Analysis and Reporting
    • Track, report and analyze data on key performance indicators
    • Participate in the establishment of budgets
    • Track and report results to management
  • Help with bike related events, like Bike-to-Work Day, Wellness Fairs, Transportation Fairs, classes on basic bike safety and maintenance and lead rides.
  • Occasionally rebalance the bike system using a company vehicle, on and off the campus

Salary commensurate with experience

We run a robust bike program for a high-tech company headquartered in Menlo Park and are hiring a team of Bike Ambassadors to help promote safe bike commuting to, from and around their corporate campus.

The role of the Bike Ambassadors is to encourage employees to bike commute to/from work and encourage safe cycling habits around campus. They provide these services by developing and promoting programs such as events, classes/clinics, group rides and onsite amenities that encourage bicycling as safe and effective transportation.

If you’re an experienced bike commuter, with outstanding customer service skills, and a real passion for helping people ride happily and safely, then this could be your dream job!

Core Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with team to develop and promote programs to encourage new riders
  • Assist in data collection and analysis that demonstrates the benefits of bike commuting and safety trends on campus
  • Create educational and marketing materials to promote bike commuting and safe use of campus bikes
  • Develop, facilitate and promote classes on bike safety, bike commuting and basic bike maintenance
  • Offer guidance and education to employees at key intersections on how to safely travel across campus
  • Staff and coordinate bike-related events, like monthly Bike-to-Work Days, Transportation Fairs, etc.
  • Respond to employee requests and questions about bike commuting, bike related amenities and campus bike use

Qualifications

  • Passion for bikes as everyday transportation
  • Comfortable working with computers, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, content creation software (Adobe illustrator, Photoshop) and marketing through social media (Facebook, Instagram).
  • Experience in project management and curriculum development
  • Customer service focused, with emphasis on responsiveness and professionalism
  • Reliable and responsible
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and prioritization skills
  • Experience as a bike commuter preferred
  • Photography/videography experience a plus

Full-Time Bicycle Mechanic (Menlo Park, CA)

We are seeking a pro-level, experienced bicycle mechanic to work at a Silicon Valley tech company supporting its bike program.

Bikes Make Life Better, Inc. is seeking a full-time (40 hours/week + benefits and weekends free) experienced bicycle mechanic to service a growing corporate bike program. In addition to maintaining the fleet bikes used daily by thousands of employees, you’ll also be working to prep and repair employee loaner bikes in our warehouse facility, as well as support our full-service bike shop working on a mix of employee and company owned bicycles.

Ideal candidate will be competently able to diagnose, repair and accurately document work electronically in a timely, efficient manner. This is a fast-paced, dynamic cutting-edge bike program unlike any other traditional bike shop with a strong, close-knit team and a simple mission: to get more people on bikes, whether for transportation, recreation or commuting to work.

Minimum qualifications:

  • 5+ years as a professional bike mechanic, team mechanic or bike mechanic instructor
  • Education, training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Proven ability to assemble and work on all types of bikes, including high-end road and mountain bikes
  • Solid computer skills (POS, Excel, CRM) and comfort learning/using new programs
  • Friendly and customer service-driven
  • Self-starter with superb time management skills and the ability to multitask in a collaborative, busy work environment
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Familiarity with social media
